How I am Different

I like what I do every day.  I don't know many people like me who decided to be an attorney at the age of 10 or whose favorite childhood hero was Abe Lincoln.

I get to know my clients, and they share their lives with me.  I like to take my time to listen.  Review. Discuss.  Review again. Agree.

Some years ago, one of my clients called me to tell me that he wanted to prepare his will as soon as possible.  I thought about the worst-case scenario, prepared my notes and file, and was ready to spend hours with him discussing his options.  We spent hours talking, but he just wanted not my lawyerly advice but my thoughts on managing a disagreement with his son, who was also his business partner.  I never billed for that time; his trust was and continues to be invaluable to me.

I gave up on the hourly billing a long time ago, it serves well on some issues, but it defeats the whole purpose of building a solid relationship.
